5/14 Draft Questions - Noah Krohngold

1. Melissa Castillo-Garsow cites MC Audry Funk's statements that "We all come from a very machista culture" and how the male-dominated perspective in music, particularly hip hop, objectifies women and sustains outdated and misogynistic views towards women (Castillo-Garsow, 338). In what ways does listening to women in hip hop break down these barriers and what challenges might women face when trying to break into the music sphere?

2. Hip hop often includes imagery that some would consider as impolite or crude. Castillo-Garsow, however, states that "hip hop is an opportunity to publicize this violence as a way to stop it," especially in a society that's so connected as we are today (Castillo-Garsow, 341). Some would disagree with this statement, arguing that exposing people to this content makes them more prone to participate. Explain how this exposure enables women's issues to be brought to the forefront and encourages social action.

3. Jilian Baez notes that "women do not reach as many audience members as they do in traditional media outlets," yet counters with the concept that social media content differs greatly from better traditional media's content (Baez, 59). How do the creativity and quick nature of social media contribute to the furthering of women's voices in society and advancing political ideals?

4. Social media content tends to change based on a person's following and the platform they're on. For example, "Posts on Facebook are usually much shorter than blog entries" (Baez, 72). Knowing this, are there specific platforms that activists should prioritize for their messages and what factors lead you to select those platforms.
