5/27 Draft Questions, Grace Burchett

1)    In minute 1:30 of the Refinery 29 video, they say that “in order to function, capitalism has to first exploit nature and also exploit women”. Do you agree with this statement, or do you believe there will be a time when this statement isn’t true?

2)    In “What does it mean to be an indigenous woman?”, the author argues that schools can become a colonizing force (94). In the Refinery 29 video, they talked to Nina Gualinga, a woman who was educated in Sweden and then returned to become an activist for her indigenous community. Do you think that education, particularly Western education, is/can be a colonizing force?

3)    In “Pachamama and the Mad Old Woman”, the author states that the women interviewed “were all Spanish speakers and did not identify as indigenous women, but rather as campesinas (peasants)”. Why do you think this identification is important/what implications does it have?
