5/4 Draft Questions, Grace Burchett

1) “we don’t know where it is made, tell me what’s fair about this trade” is a lyric in “Chocolate” by Entre Mujeres that stood out to me. Do you think transparency can play a major role in recognizing inequalities in our consumerist society? Or do you think the consumptions of products made in poor conditions will continue, even with this knowledge?

2) Along similar lines, do you think a capitalist society like America can ever become truly aware of where and how our products are made? Or do you think that even with awareness of unsafe conditions, we can ever transition to complete “fair” or “ethical” labor?

3) In “Mixing in the Kitchen” the author explains that she advertised her project as more family centered, compared to just women because she was advised that focusing on only the women would disincentivize people from participating. Do you think this detracted from the idea of feminist expression within music?

4) I’m personally curious about why Dr. Martha Gonzolaz’ Grammy award gathered more attention than her Fulbright scholarship or other awards. This makes sense to the larger public, but it surprised me when she said she got similar reactions within an academic setting. What do you think causes this difference in reactions?
