Altar - Angie Lai
The title of my altar is Diaspora Experiences: Old and New. The more contemporary usage of the term diaspora generally describes migrants, or the dispersion/spread of any people from their original homeland. I arrived at this topic because as a daughter of two immigrants, I’ve witnessed what it means to be away from your homeland. In this class, we’ve explored the history of the borderlands as well as the displacement and mixed identities that result from it, leading to Chicana feminist ideologies and praxis. This altar explores the concepts of cross-cultural identity and the resilience of migrants across the world, bridging the past, present, and future. I dedicate this altar to the diaspora groups across the world, and to my mom.
After I set up my altar, I realized the potential it had now that we’ve gone digital. I decided to add a few elements and just have fun with it. Digitally modifying it has allowed me to communicate my theme better while incorporating more traditional elements.
