Altar - More than a Statistic
By: YuYu Madigan
This altar is for survivors of college-campus sexual assaults cases. The number of cases each year is shocking but what's worse is knowing how many go unreported. The only way to change the statistics is by being a voice to the people who were attempted to be silenced.
In this altar the four elements are represented as follow:
Fire - the candles to beacon a way home as well as the fire rose unity symbol
Earth - messages of support from the MeToo movement to nourish others to speak out, the purest act of resilience as survivors take back their narratives and proclaim that they are not what happened to them but are more than it
Wind- college campus logos from across the states to show that this happens everywhere but there is also unity and compassion
Water- three bowls of water; one with salt, one that's filtered, and that's saturated with sugar to represent different feelings and steps of healing.
Pencils, calculators, and earrings litter the altar to humanize the victims in an attempt to show that these folks are more than just another statistic or a victim but they are people with lives, goals, dreams, and aspirations.
