Brainstorm 6 - Chloe Rabinowitz

The technologies Gonzalez describes as resilience practices rooted in Indigenous Knowledge are the shawls, the braids, the scarves, etc that Indigenous women use in birthing ceremonies and rituals. These technologies are foundations of tradition and culture that transcend human existence to signify a greater relationship between these women and their children with the natural world, corresponding to resiliency of Indigenous women to uphold their cultural values even after being colonized and oppressed. As seen in the “‘Girl in a Coma’ Tweets Chicanafuturism” piece, preserving culture and tradition is essential to creating unity and community among those who have constantly been written out of mainstream narratives. For Girl in a Coma, this resiliency is practiced in the form of song and the use of technology to change discourse, and the narratives they’ve been left out of are the ignored contributions of Chicanas to the punk rock scene. The “Clumsy Sky” video embodies the ideas of resiliency and convivencia by demonstrating how music has brought all of these people together, no matter how different they may be. By furthering the idea of forming affinities among differences, “Clumsy Sky” highlights how expression of cultures and identities can unite people of all backgrounds towards a common goal of including people who have been oppressed by the current systems in place.
