Brainstorm #6 - Eric Fong

Patrisia Gonzales is referring to a woman's shawl and braids as technologies that are used for various parts of sacred practices and everyday life. For example, a woman's shawl is used as a fetus adjuster during childbirth, an altar during ceremonies, and even just as a piece of cloth to warm her back (Gonzales 85). The conceptual thread that links Gonzales' work to the Girl in a Coma works is that Gonzales provides historical evidence of Chicana women utilizing everyday (albeit simple) devices for sacred purposes; Chicana women have experience turning everyday things into something that can be empowered with culture and identity.
Linking back to Martha Gonzalez’s writing on the practice of “convivencia,” convivencia is represented in the “Clumsy Sky” video through their use of music and 'tweets' to bring people together. The definition of convivencia is the spirit of making/living life together while revolving around music making. "Clumsy Sky" seeks to provide representation for Chicana feminist in the music arena while voicing support for other music groups to build community as seen in their quotes of Chicanafuturist ideas (Pallan 162). Chicana feminist need to revolutionize their use of everyday technologies in order to maintain relevance as well as build community as well. Girl in a Coma embodies both the ideas of appropriating new technologies (new music) and utilizing music to build community. They are the embodiment of Chicanafuturism and Gonzalez's "convivencia."
