Brainstorm 6
GWSS Brainstorm Week 6
In “Ceremony of Memory: The Call and Response”, Partisia Gonzales uses the term “technology” to describe the resilience practices embedded IK (Indigenous Knowledge) that active “female cosmologies in the natural world and healing rites.”
1. What are the technologies she describes? What conceptual thread from this reading links to "'Girl in a Coma' Tweets Chicanafuturism: Decolonial Visionaries, New Media and Archivista Praxis” and the “Clumsy Sky” video?
a. Partisia Gonzales describes “traditional technologies” as including, plants, shawls, and purification rites.
b. In addition to describing these technologies Partisia, writes “Lucila’s home, floor, and body became sites of subversion—empowered places that defied imposed paradigms that sought to control nature and birth, the most unpredictable of events (Davis-Floyd 1992), and the Native female body (89).” I found this final quote to be especially strong because it alludes to the notion that reclaiming ceremony and traditional technologies/cosmologies is a subversive act that defies forces of colonization. This is relevant to “Girl in a Coma’ Tweets Chicanafuterism: Decolonial Visionaries,” in that through introduction to Girl with Coma, we find a mestiza of past, present, and future in music/video form. In which technologies are used to liberate and not to in service to further colonization. It is this remembering of the past melded with present and future, that reflects a “decolonial potentiality where subjects such as the band and their fans imagine and live in a time where their realities are valued and centered (Habell-Pallan,167).”
2. Linking back to Martha Gonzalez’s writing on the practice of “convivencia,” how is convivencia represented in the “Clumsy Sky” video.
a. Convivencia references a relational “deep being,” or quality of presence, this is evident in the Clumsy Sky’s video flashing back and forth between the present and past, and reminds us that the music is informed by and connected to the past as well as the present.
