In "Ceremony of Time" Gonzales tells the reader about the Spanish inquisition into Mexico and how despite their best efforts to subdue the spiritual beliefs of the natives through means of threats and physical torture, they were unable to destroy this vital part of native Mexican culture. Through these stories of the past, the ancestors of these native people who were persecuted and attacked for the personal gains of another are able to look upon the struggles of their ancestors and find the strength within them. By practicing these rituals and telling their stories these ancient people are never forgotten and never must face that social death. This continuity of remembrance is essential to the culture of native Mexican's today as they continue to fight oppression to keep their culture alive which is in a way trying to keep themselves alive.
This idea is further explored in the video by Girl in a Coma. At the beginning of the video the bar they are performing in is empty and they are just playing to themselves. This is symbolic of the native people fighting to keep their culture alive even if no one else will listen. By the end of the video the bar is full of people listening to the music. This not only is a strong piece of feminist media by showing a woman being successful in a field traditionally dominated by men but also is symbolic of the future all people wish to one day have. To have their culture celebrated and remembered.
