Brainstorm #7
By: YuYu Madigan
Social media is a great tool to practice resilience and combat social death. Week 6 and Week 7 readings highlighted the profound power and destruction that technology yields. Last week discussed harmful algorithms that were oftentimes racist and sexist, contrasted against the impact media traction had on social movements. This week we dove deeper into social issues that needed to be addressed and found ways that activist take to these platforms to leverage their voices in the fight for undocumented immigrant rights and queer rights. Social media is accessible and it lives forever which enables it to become an effective platform. It keeps a message, a quote, a belief, in concrete etchings on the web. In the Undocumented and Awkward webseries uses humor and satire to highlight the struggles faced by immigrants everywhere which creates a welcoming space for discussion surrounding these oftentimes taboo topics. By providing a voice to these marginalized groups, Salgado is effectively combating social death and displaying resilience. Furthermore, these more "niche" ways to promote social movements are the effect of lack of attention from mainstream media as highlighted by the Undocuqueer article where they say, "UndocuQueer activists changed the immigration debate despite limited access to mainstream media channels", showing that they will continue fighting despite these obstacles and learn how to get creative with it.
