Brainstorm Week 7 - Abby Hecko

In the text, Out of the Shadows, into the Streets! Transmedia Organizing and the Immigrant Rights Movement, it states that as DREAMers were fighting for education,  “these young undocumented activists conducted a sit in and hunger strike that captured attention across social media, print, TV, and radio. Thousands watched their live stream, and thousands more signed petitions in support of their demands,” (Costanza-Chock, 129). Through social media platforms, the stories of these DREAMers were shared with the world. Because of their livestream, their beliefs and wants were spread across the country and thousands of people agreed and signed the petition. Social media is an act of resilience, as can be seen in this livestream that raised awareness for the rights of the DREAMers. In the youtube film, Undocumented and Awkward: Episode 2, there is a man who went to college, has a college degree, yet works at a hotel as a cleaner and is undocumented. He is juxtaposed against his old classmate, a man who went to Brown and has his own business. This film illustrates the unfair treatment of those who are undocumented. Although the first man has a college degree and is bright, he is stuck working a blue collar job due to his documentation. This film is an example of a Chicanxfuturim, it raises concern and awareness about citizenship, discrimmination, the DREAM act, and many other parts of Chicanx life. Through the Chicanxfuturims of youtube, live streams, and many other media platforms, people are raising awareness around the injustices posed to the Chicanx community.
