Brainstorm Week 7 - Noah Krohngold
Social media has empowered many groups in giving them the platform for people to hear their voices when they wouldn't have had the same opportunity without technology. However, the algorithms that power these platforms can play a dangerous role in determining who gets heard, so ensuring that parity exists in the creation of these algorithms is key for promoting equality among groups. Luckily, social media has been pretty positive (for the most part), and social media has been a practice of resilience since communication with those we disagree with has never been easier. However, arguments on social media are rarely civil, and very little is accomplished in my experience with social media arguments. Whereas technology used to be seen as an other-worldly aspect of life that was previously inaccessible, social media has put technology in the hands of the consumer and allowed them to partake in a revolutionary invention that promotes discussion. Instead of being scared of technology, creating a space for technology to equalize groups through discussion enables technology to help communities instead of serving as a status symbol between groups.
