Brainstorm Week 7

Using social media as an algorithm of emancipation helps fight the racial stereotypes that delegitimize Latin American Immigrants. "The undocumented- usually depicted as invisible, passive, and technologically illiterate in the popular imaginary- who are utilizing social media the most heavily and strategically for immigration reform," (Baez, 2016, p. 57). By utilizing social media, which is considered "western," "technological," and "advanced" shifts these activists out of these stereotypes and into a frame that is at equal footing with those they are fighting against. This also lends legitimization to the movement. Relating to Chicanxfuturism, this places the Chicano people as part of the future, through the use of technology, rather than allowing them to remain depicted as a backwards people. This reflects the continued resilience practices of Chicanas in the face of Social Death, as they refuse to remain invisible despite the pressure to stay hidden.
