Brainstorm Week 7
The readings and content of week 6 centered around Chicanxfuturism and how social media and technology can used as a platform for change. The readings from this week discussed this in more detail talking about how social media allows individuals to share their art and stories. For example, in "Layers of Humanity": Interview with undocuqueer artivist Julio Salgado, Julio Salgado creates a space for individuals identifying as queer and undocumented. He mentions "I saw it on Facebook, somebody commented [and used it]" (Salgado, 304). Salgado essentially uses the power of social media to spread information about this unfamiliar terminology. Salgado's usage of "undocuqueer" is similar to how Catherine Ramirez places science and Chicanas together. In addition, in Out of the Shadows, Into the Streets!: Transmedia Organazing and the Immigrant Rights Movement, Sasha Costanza-Chock discusses how there are are various forms of online social media activism. Individuals like Salgado reject Costanz-Chock's concept of "social death" by making their ideas about minority groups so widely accessible. Media online as simple as videos like Undocumented and Awkward by Dreamers Adrift allow the public to understand the lives of undocumented individuals. This usage of social media and spreading messages can be seen as an practice of resilience, as these individuals are able to voice their opinions.
