Brainstorm Week 9 - Abby Hecko

In the text, Indigenous Matters, the definition of what is Indigenous is stated as, “It is widely understood in Indigenous thought that matter, materiality, and ecology are not  separable from place… The term Indigenous, in fact, implies relation to a place,” (Million 97). While the Ecuadorian Constitution directly grants ecosystems as rights bearing entities, this definition of what is indigenous does something very similar. Instead of giving the ecosystem its own separate rights, the term Indigenous gives the ecosystem rights through association. What this means is the indigenous land receives its  power through the connection it has to the people and the culture surrounding it. Both the Ecuadorian Consitution and the term Indigeous grant rights to land, however they do  it in different ways. In the text, Writing The Goodlife, Ybarra states, “goodlife writing rectifies some destructive ecocritical practices, challenging the field to once and for all abandon its tacit approval of settler colonialism,” (Ybarra 10). The Goodlife writings and practice of writing is an effective way to create an inclusive practice to take care of the  environment. Much of the writing that the world has been exposed to is not as inclusive and effective as the  goodlife technique, which doesnt contain the discriminatory  views of environmentalism. Through Goodlife writing the strategies to gain environmental rights can be brought about in an effective manner.
