Live Blog Post #1 - Nick Roberts
I thought it was amazing to be able to hear Ophelia Esparza and her history as she carries down the traditions of her ancestors and gives them to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family has been practicing this altar making for hundreds of years and for generations and hearing about this living history and culture was very powerful. I really enjoyed the symbolism they talked about in their altars and how it was all created to honor their ancestors and those who are no longer with us. I also thought it was very interesting hearing Ophelia talk about the different kinds of altars she has created and what they mean. It is important to realize there are more kinds of altars than those just for dia de los muertos and listening to Ophelia talk about the process of building these altars and who they honor was also very powerful.
