The mother-daughter duo, Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna, just shared their experiences about altar-making.
Ofeila Esparza started off the Women Who Rock Unconference talking about her grandmother’s journey toEast Los Angeles; she further emphasized the importance of learning about one’s culture and heritage from home.
Throughout their time, they were giving the behind-the-scenes of what inspired them to do specific altars, how they prepared for them and how they built them. Personally, I enjoyed how Ofeila explained about the altar-making process behind Juana Maria. She explained her story and how her altar symbolizes her life by making it completely out of materials inspired by her story (using organic materials).
Rosanna concluded their time, by emphasizing that the altar is a sacred space that allows one to reclaim who they are and their cultural traditions. Altar-making is a process that goes beyond decoration and delves into the realm of spiritual healing.
