Hearing Dona Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna Esparza Ahrens discuss the altars that they have made is so interesting and inspiring. The pieces of art they have made are really incredible, and through their artistic choices it is very clear how many symbols are showing the joys of life and living. One of my favorites was this altar, which I think is a quintessential example of an altar. This altar is dedicated to honoring the victims in Juarez. Even though the situation is tragic and awful, this altar shows them as powerful women. The lagrima, or tears, designs symbolize tears. However, they are beautifully made, showing a deep duality of both sorrow for their death but beauty in their life. I also find it amazing that they were cultural advisors for the movie Coco! I really enjoyed watching this movie and I find it very cool that they were a part of making such a wonderful film in addition to the work they are doing with making physical altars.
