Live Blog Post #2 - Sarah Yang

The panelist discussion about altars and how they process grief is very compelling. Dona Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna Esparza Ahrens started off the conversation stating that they use altars as a way to process their feelings and pain. I thought it was especially interesting that they didn’t mean for their art to be social activism, but they are and the altars carry energy, prayer, and intention. I also thought Omi King’s discussion about spirituality was engaging, as she talked about public altars in Nigeria and how they give space for saying thanks, breathing, and prayer. I agree with the women in the panel when they were saying that more public places meant for reflection and connection with one’s personal spirits and even ancestors would be beneficial for not only individuals but for the community as a whole.
