May 7th Draft Questions

1) In "How did social media unite and empower DREAMers?", Basma concludes with "Numerous movements have gained attention and reached their goals through social media", what other movements are an example of this and what do you foresee will be to come.
2) It's no secret that Google and other search engines have flawed algorithms as highlighted in "Missed Connections" but this article was written 8 years ago and these search engines have come under increased scrutiny since then in regards to racist search results as well. Do you feel Google and related companies are adequately handling these cases now?
3) Monstrous Children of Pregnant Androids mentions how "Pulse occurred in a time of increasing murders of trans Latinx women and an increase in the visibility of murders of Black people in the United States, including Latinx Black people." and demonstrates this point by acknowledging Trumps election shortly after this tragedy. Why do you suppose there is such an increasing anti, well everything, sentiment being expressed in our nation?
4) The Afrofuturism/Chicanafuturism Fictive Kin article quotes a quote saying how "Star Wars featured “every kind of alien . . . but only one kind of human—white ones”. I found a graphic that broke down the talking time for each gender and it showed a stark contrast where males dominated the screen over women. It also shows demonstrates the distribution of dialogue for race through the years showing that white folk took up 100% in '77 to 55.3% in '16 of the dialogue. What larger implications does this shift have and how can we as consumers support and normalize this inclusion in science fiction rather than making it a single example and token case study?
