Monday 5/4 Questions - Angie Lai
- In the chapter, "Mixing in the Kitchen: 'Entre Mujeres' Feminine Translocal Composition Actions", Gonzalez described some initial hesitation of participation from women in Veracruz because they thought her "'feminist' approach was too radical", despite Entre Mujeres not being a feminist project (74). We've sort of addressed this before in another reading from a few weeks ago, but what do you think of the connotations of the word "feminism"? What are the common perceptions and do you think they are founded on legitimacy?
- In the chapter, "Mixing in the Kitchen: 'Entre Mujeres' Feminine Translocal Composition Actions", Rebolloso says, "when a woman accepts motherhood, she transcends individualism" (81). I thought that this was a really interesting idea and I actually agree. What do you make of this idea of transcending individualism in motherhood?
- In the song "Chocolate", Jupiter raps, "think of Abdul the next time you buy chocolate" (2:08). Although I try to be conscious of my purchases, especially with clothing, I often forget to think twice about buying certain things. What other goods do we take for granted? What are the real costs of those goods?
- In the SFP video, Gonzales talks about how fandango's sense of "community" inspired her and humbled her, coming from a world of professional music where individual performance is the norm (5:45). Why is participatory music important? How does the experience of collaboration in music differ from the experience of being the performer or viewer?
