Monday Draft Week 10 - Paul Druta
1. In Reading #1, Monica de la Torre talks about the importance of Chicana women not only creating programs for public broadcasts, but also learning the technical skills needed to run a radio show: "Their model of alternative public media included programming for Chicanas and farmworkers, segments of the population that had not been addressed by mass media; a national Spanish-language news network; and the training of other women as producers and technical staff." (de la Torre 176). This parallels the modern need for more Chicana women involved in the technology industry, but just as a radio station is tied to a specific area, technological innovation hubs tend to be found in large coastal cities, far away from many rural Chicano populations that are underrepresented. What are some ways that this geographic divide can be lessened so that technical skills can be made available to all people?
2. One of the biggest advantages of radio stations as a way of community organization is that they were publicly funded: "When President Lyndon B. Johnson spoke at the passing of the Public
Broadcasting Act of 1967 - the last piece of his Great Society legislation - he affirmed that the airwaves belonged to all people, for the "enlightenment" of all people" (de la Torre 175). This public support meant that the information presented by radio programs was generally regarded as trustworthy. This is in contrast to modern media sources such as social media where the proliferation of fake news has made the public much more skeptical of content. What are some ways that modern community activists can give the public confidence in the validity of their online material?
3. In Reading #3, Lilly Fowler discusses the irony in the large number of Latino/as that are essential workers and the lack of medical attention that they receive from government and health institutions: "Experts say another reason the virus has hit Latinos hard is that they work in industries that are considered essential or that cannot be done remotely."(Fowler). Seeing as how important Latino/as are to the economy, would it not be within the best interest of the government to protect these communities?
4. In Reading #4, Lilly Fowler discusses how small businesses run by undocumented immigrants have been particularly hard hit by COVID-19: "Mayor Jenny Durkan also made funds available for small business owners, requiring only a Taxpayer Identification number to apply, but the period for the first round of applicants closed last month." (Fowler). What are some ways that we as individuals can help support small businesses?
