Thurs. Draft Questions - Abby Hecko

Hi! My name is Abby Hecko and I am a freshman studying computer science. In my free time during. quarantine, I have been knitting and water coloring a lot.

  1. In the article, Missed Connections, it nrings attention to the “types of biases that are shaping the information prioritized in search engines,” (Johnson 41).  Much of the blame for the popularity of searches is being blamed on Google. The first page of google searches when you search something is typically the most popular. So, when you  look up “Latina Women” and porn pops up, this is primarily because it is what has been searched. Is asking google to change this the best solution? Or would trying to reach out and  change the sexualization around women of color be a more  effective response opposed to putting the blame on Google?
  2. In the article, How did social media unite and empower DREAMers?, it speaks of  how DREAMers only had the benefits last until highschool graduation, “their “illegality faded in the background,” as they studied, socialized, and immersed themselves into the American culture. However, as they reached adulthood, their constraints became apparent,” (Basma). I am wondering why the federal government would be opposed to giving these students full American citzenship?
  3. In the article, How did social media unite and empower DREAMers?, it says “Numerous movements have gained attention and reached their goals through social media,” (Basma). I want to know who started these movements and on what platforms they’d be on?
  4. In the text, Afrofuturism/Chicanafuturism, it states referring to the Star Wars cast, that  it had, “every kind of  alien but only one kind of  human- white ones,” (Ramirez 185). Did this abstract cast of aliens make people of color and those who are not white seem more like aliens? Or did these science fiction characters of aliens normalize those who are different?
