Thurs. Draft questions - Chloe Rabinowitz
In "What Search Engines Say About Women", Noble describes how “Search engine results don’t only mask the unequal access to social, political, and economic life in the United States as broken down by race, gender, and sexuality—they also maintain it.”. How do the first-page results that come up when someone searches for a theme related to women of color affect the viewer’s interpretation and understanding of that culture, and specifically the women in it?
In "Afrofuturism/Chicanafuturism", Ramirez emphasizes that “By appropriating the imagery of science and technology, Chicanafuturist works disrupt age-old racist and sexist binaries that exclude Chicanas and Chicanos from visions of the future” (Ramirez 189). How does mainstream society's purposeful disclusion of Chicana/o people in Sci-Fi define and restrict their current and future roles in the world?
In "How did social media unite and empower DREAMers", it touches on how “Through the use of social media, undocumented youths regained a sense of community by sharing their obstacles and fears with others in similar situations”. How can marginalized and disenfranchised individuals utilize social media as a tool to connect, create a discourse, and/or establish new narratives?
In "Monstrous Children of Pregnant Androids", Cardenas says, “I am the monstrous child of immigrants feared by the right”. How does the systematic demonization of immigrants as monstrous contribute to hate crimes and violence against this community in America?
