Thursday Draft Questions - Sarah Yang

1. In “Voicing Citizenship”, Judith Butler’s concept of “performative contradiction” is a “paradox whereby marginalized groups ‘have no right of free speech under the law although they’re speaking freely, precisely in order to demand the right to speak freely’” is examined (64). What does this look like in social media? How are people being uplifted, as well as silenced to talk about what they want to?
2. How does the collaborative nature of cyphers, in which there is a push and pull of communication between the group and individuals, speak to the culture in which it is a part of? Do other cultures use practices like cyphers?
3. How is hip hop a unique space where people, particularly Chicana feminists, can express themselves? How is it different from other forms of art?
4. How has pop culture impacted the hip hop Chicana feminista movement? How has social media changed the way that Chicana feministas have functioned?
