Thursday Draft Questions - Zahra McKee

  • In the BBC interview, feminists Audrey Funk says that "without women in hip-hop, it isn't hip-hop", speaking about misogynistic lyrics in some hip-hop. Why does main-stream hip-hop include so much language degrading to women then? How can we change this?
  • The hip-hop community includes lots of different kinds of artists, from DJs to producers to b-boys and girls, to graffiti artists, to rappers, and everything between. How do you think this multi-faceted structure has influenced the community's values of acceptance and unity?
  • In Cyphers: Hip Hop and Improvization, Nikki Giovanni discusses African American survival as a form of improvisation "If we can’t have ham, we will boil chitterlings; if we are given rotten peaches, we will make cobblers; if given scraps, we will make quilts; take away our drums, and we will clap our hands. We prove the human spirit will prevail. We will take what we have to make what we need” (1-2). How does this message connect to the feminist resiliency practices we have discussed in class?
  • Do you think social media or traditional news outlets are more accessible to larger audiences? Consider content creators and viewers?
