Thursday Draft Questions

1. "Hispanos have been excluded from the world of science, technology, and reason, and confined to the domain of superstition, mythology, and intuition.".(Ramirez, Deus ex Machina). How does capitalism profit from the culture of Chicanos while simultaneously excluding them from from the "future" and "civilization"?


2. "Undocumented youths regained a sense of community by sharing their obstacles and fears," and through this were able to gain protection under the DREAM act (Basma, Social Media... DREAMers). How does isolation and shame keep a group of people oppressed, and how did social media alleviate this?

3. Google's search engine produces "antifeminist or even pornographic representations of women [that] show up on the first page of results in search engines by default," (Noble, Missed Connections). Why does Google shift blame away from themselves for this and are not motivated to fix their algorithms to produce less damaging results? 

4. Ramirez states that "science fiction can prompt us to recognize and rethink the status quo by depicting an alternative world," (Ramirez, Afrofuturism/Chicanafuturism). Do other fictional genres confer strong frameworks for social justice, such as fantasy?
