1. In Ramirez’s chapter Deus Ex Machina, Ramirez comments on the opposition that her art created: her new image of the Virgin of Guadalupe created sentiments on “the changing roles of women in Hispano culture” (81). In what other instances has art or modern technology started a conversation about household roles, human justice or rights?

2. In the article Afrofuturism/Chicanafuturism by Ramirez, she states that “science fiction can prompt us to recognize and rethink the status quo by depicting an alternative world” (185). In what ways do you think that this rings true in your life? How does it compare to historical books talking about the world, such as Animal Farm or Uncle Tom’s Cabin?

3. In the article Missed Connections, Noble states “But what’s missing in the search engine is awareness about stereotypes, inequity, and identity.” How much of a person’s identity do you think is created online? Or is the search result more a symbol of how a particular demographic experiences the world?

4. An article on Medium, discusses how the rise of social media brought about the DREAM act. The use of social media was also addressed in the article, Monstrous Children of Pregnant Androids: Latinx Futures after Orlando, specifically with the addressing of the Pulse Night Club shooting and the children separated from their families at the border. What are some of the ways that social media has helped personalize the injustices, violence or tragedies that exist in the United States?
