During Giovanna White's dance, in addition to just enjoying the performance and the music, I took note of her shirt that said, "Black Healing Matters". I think that the aspect of healing in times like these is not considered as much as it needs to be. I thought this was incredibly pertinent, given all of the news and videos that are being shared on social media right now. Although the jarring nature of these videos can often be a wake-up call to those ignorant of what's going on, I think for many, we have moved beyond the point of needing to be made aware of these racist acts of police brutality. Sharing these graphic and exploitative videos without any content warnings can be traumatizing and do more harm than good. I think that in times like these, we need to understand that healing is a necessary part of addressing these injustices too.

In Week 5, we watched the film, Senorita Extraviada: Crimes Against Women in Juarez by Lourdes Portillo and read the chapter, "Toward a Planetary Civil Society" by Rosalinda Fregoso to learn about the femicide occurring in Juarez, Mexico. The latter focused on the response and the resilience movements that emerged from these events. Ofelia and Rosanna Esparza, who we are familiar with from their iconic altar making from other readings and the demonstrative video, showed an image of their beautiful altar dedicated to the 300+ missing women of Juarez. Ofelia said that in her altars, she likes to focus on honoring and celebrating the lives of people. She also mentioned that the altar contained more than 300 items, representing the 300+ women. Every single one of the altars they have shown so far has amazed me. The colors, size, symmetry, and general aesthetics of these altars are stunning!
